“Lately, I’ve been less strict about avoiding gluten and dairy,” she wrote. “I noticed my tummy would hurt when I occasionally treated myself to ice cream or pizza, so I’ve switched things up. I’m trying to keep small amounts of both dairy and gluten in my system, so my body is used to it when I do have a little.”
The eldest Kardashian sister, 39, is known for her adherence to strict diets — including keto and intermittent fasting. In September 2016, she revealed that she and her three children — Mason, 8, Penelope, 6, and Reign, 3 — were going to eliminate gluten and dairy in their home. (She copped to being less strict with her brood: “Of course, we pick our battles and I do let the kids have popcorn at the movies and a churro at Disneyland, etc.,” she explained at the time. “But for birthday parties, which can sometimes be every weekend, I bring extra gluten and dairy-free cupcakes … and they are happy with that.”)
Her dietary switch comes from a desire to live her best life. Joyful globe-trotting, she noted, isn’t exactly conducive to food restrictions. “I love trying local food and eating everything without rules — especially when I’m traveling — so this is working better,” she continued. “When the kids and I were on vacation in Italy this summer, they loved getting gelato every day — and I always had a small scoop, too!” The Disneyland enthusiast noted that visiting the Anaheim, California, theme park with her kids will also yield an exception: “That’s the time to live life and I’ll have whatever I want.”
At home, however, the organic food devotee — who has admitted she doesn’t suffer from Celiac Disease and isn’t lactose intolerant — will stick to her previous rule. “Everything in my pantry is still free of dairy and gluten, so when I’m at home, it’s still how I eat,” she wrote. “But when I go out, or have a craving, I’ll have whatever I want. I try to do everything in moderation in my usual routine.”
The big question: Will Kardashian’s new guidelines actually help her body get reacclimated to gluten and dairy? NYC-based dietitian Keri Glassman, tells Us that your body does get used to not digesting substances when you eliminate them from your diet. So, regardless of a scientific study, she notes: “That’s something that is logical.”
